How to Calculate a Tip
A tip (or gratuity) is an extra amount added to a bill to reward good service, typically expressed as a percentage of the pre-tip bill total. The calculation is simple in principle — multiply the bill by the tip percentage — but doing it in your head at the table, especially while splitting a bill between several people, is where most tip calculators earn their keep.
Tip Calculation Formula
Tip Amount = Bill Amount × Tip Percentage ÷ 100
Total Amount = Bill Amount + Tip Amount
Example: A ₹1,000 bill with an 18% tip:
Tip = 1000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180
Total = 1000 + 180 = ₹1,180
Splitting the Bill
When splitting between several people, both the tip and the total are divided evenly by the number of people:
Tip Per Person = Tip Amount ÷ Number of People
Total Per Person = Total Amount ÷ Number of People
Example: The ₹1,180 total above split 4 ways: ₹1,180 ÷ 4 = ₹295 per person (₹45 of which is each person’s share of the tip).

This calculator computes the math; the expected percentage is up to local custom and your own judgment of the service.

Tip and total amounts are rounded to the nearest paisa/cent (2 decimal places) at each step — the same rounding convention used throughout this site's other money calculators (GST, EMI, and so on) — so the numbers you see are exactly what you'd get computing by hand with a calculator and rounding at each stage.
